  • “Don’t put me on a column as high as Nelson’s” is apparently a reference to Nelson’s Column – a London monument honoring admiral Horatio Nelson. (There are a few column monuments to Nelson – so this could reference another similar column?)

  • First appearance of Corporal Loyall Farragut, the son of David Farragut.

  • The distinction between “word of” and “word from” indicates that the boy’s father Admiral Farragut is dead. “Word from” would have indicated a message from the living admiral. “Word of” describes essentially ‘what happened to’ the admiral.
